AFTER a few months in lockdown and restrictions on just about everything there was a bit of easing in NSW/ACT so the Veterans MC Federal Chapter decided to hit the road for a run down the coast.
A run down the coast on a bright sunny day sounds great but the temps in this part of Australia struggle to reach double digits this time of year and even heading to the coast means a rug-up.
We departed the clubhouse in Queanbeyan at 1000 and it was great to back on the road with 20 brothers enjoying a ride in a pack for the first time since Thunderwest back in March. First stop is always Braidwood and coffee.
After a quick caffeine fix it was down the Clyde and through Batemans Bay and Lunch at O’Briens Million Dollar View Hotel in Narooma. A great feed and some of the best views around.
After lunch we headed off along the coast up through Bermagui and onto our lodgings for the night in Tathra. I was glad I did not take any gear off for this leg because it was still pretty cold despite the bright sunshine.
We were staying a motel right next to the Tathra Hotel — can’t complain about the walking distance here.
There are restrictions in place so we were pretty limited in the time we could spend in the pub as they had two booking periods so they allow as many people as possible to get a feed. I saw them turning people away if they had not booked so it was pretty popular.
We ended up back at the rooms with a few takeaway beers and talking shit for several hours. The boss had a warning order for 0800 on Sunday morning so we could ride into Bega for breakfast. It was also damn cold on the balcony so no fear of your beer getting hot that night.
After a delay getting going in the morning due to some starting problems and loading one bike onto the trailer (no names here) we hit the Maccas in Bega for breakfast and hot coffee… and loading another bike onto the recovery trailer (yep, no names again). Now there is a pretty good chance that this lot might have made a few comments…
We did get going around 1000 and headed up the Brown towards Nimmitabel. It was a great ride along that part of the Snowy Mountains Highway although there was a bit of snow and ice on the sides of the road as we approached the town.
Nimmitabel has a great little bakery and is a regular stop for the club when we come back up from the coast via the Brown Mountain. We said our farewells here and rode together as a pack peeling off as we headed our separate ways coming into the ACT.
It was great to be back on the road again as a group and I doubt there is a better way to practice social distancing than on a motorcycle. There are still plenty of restrictions in place but out on the road you just don’t notice.
