The House Dice Run

A Ride for a Fallen Mate.

WHEN A MATE can’t see ‘the light at the end of the tunnel’ and commits suicide, it doesn’t mean he wasn’t a good bloke or a top mate. One fella I know, Ferret, holds an annual House Dice Run (a roll your dice poker run) in the memory of his good mate, Dave (House), who gave up on life eight years ago by committing suicide.

Just because a mate has fallen it doesn’t mean you give up on him, and Ferret started the House Dice Run as a memorial run. This is an annual run that doesn’t advertise. This is a sort of ‘ride with ya mates’ run which has been held with great respect, growing every year because everyone has a mate or two.

The House Dice Run raises money for Suicide Prevention. This year it started off with 90 mates riding together on a hot Perth summer’s day for about 220 km (round trip), stopping at local pubs, including the Ship ‘n’ Dock Inn, The Old Serpentine Tavern, then over the Serpentine Dam stopping for a couple of pics, continuing on to the Jarrandale Pub, and then returning to the High Road Hotel for a BBQ.

The run was full of camaraderie. Two poor fellas broke down but help was only a shout away, with mates pulling over and working together to fix the bikes within no time. “What are mates for?”

All money collected on the day was donated to the Ministerial Council for Suicide Prevention, a great cause that does not receive any government funding. What a great way to remember your fallen mates and to help prevent others from passing the same way.

Congrats to Ferret & Shaz for being great mates forever to House.
